Looking for a treat recipe your dog will go crazy for? These sardine dog biscuits are packed with protein, rich in omega 3 fatty acids and other essential nutrients that can help support a healthy skin and coat, and super easy to make!
The Recipe
Prep Time: 30 min - 1 hr
Cook Time: 1.5 - 4 hrs (depending on appliance used)
Supplies
- Oven or dehydrator
- Blender or food processor
- Cookie cutter or pizza slicer or knife
- Rolling pin
- Parchment paper
- Baking sheet (if using an oven)
Ingredients
- 2 cans of sardines (no salt, in water only)
- 1 log of plain goat cheese (4 oz log - Aldi sells them for $1.85!)
- 1 cup of rolled oats (or oat flour)
Directions
- Add the sardines to a food processor or blender WITHOUT the water. (You can either dump the water, or save it to pour over your dog's kibble at meal time for an extra treat!)
- Add in the log of goat cheese.
- Blend until you have a paste.
- To thicken up the paste to reach a good dough consistency, add the oats and blend.
- Scoop the paste out onto some parchment paper and shape into a ball.
- Place the ball of dough into a dish and let it cool in the fridge for 30 minutes. This will help the dough reach an optimal consistency for rolling.
- Take the dough out of the fridge. If the outer layer has hardened a bit, knead the dough until everything is smoothed out, then work back into a ball. Smash the ball between two pieces of parchment paper.
- Roll the dough to about 3-4 mm thick (about the thickness of 1.5 to 2 slices of cheese).
- Use a cookie cutter to make fun shaped treats, or use a pizza cutter or knife to make small square treats.
- Place your treats onto a tray.
- Bake in the over at 350 degrees for 1.5-2 hours. The time to cook will vary depending on how thick you make your treats. Thicker treats may take a bit longer to bake. Check frequently after 1.5 hours until the treats reach a crunchy biscuit texture. If you are using a dehydrator, cook at 160 degrees for 3-4 hours.
- Let them cool.
- Give to your dog to enjoy! Store the treats in an airtight container in the fridge for 10 to 14 days.
