Flea and tick infestations can be a nuisance to get rid of. While conventional medications can be effective at killing fleas and ticks, they only work after these pests have bitten your dog.
In contrast, natural flea and tick products often work by repelling fleas and ticks before they attach, which is why many dog owners are making the switch to these lower toxicity, plant-based options.
In this post, we'll cover the various natural options and discuss how to create a strategic approach to ensure full coverage and protection for your dog.
Sprays and Shampoos
Sprays and shampoos are one of the most common natural flea and tick prevention methods. These products typically rely on plant-based ingredients and essential oils to help repel pests when applied to your dog’s coat. There are several brands that offer options worth considering.
Wondercide
Wondercide is one of the most recognizable natural flea and tick brands that offers a variety of options (from sprays, to shampoos, to collars, to spot-on treatments) that come in various scents including cedarwood, lemongrass, peppermint, and rosemary.
Their sprays also come in various sizes that can be useful if you need something small for on-the-go, or larger for spraying areas of your home.
The main downside, depending on your personal preference, is that the scents can be quite strong and overpowering, which is something frequently noted in their product reviews across many sites. Speaking from personal experience, I can say the same. I have the peppermint oil fragrance as I'm not much of a fan of the others, and the strength of the scent is quite overwhelming. Even my German Shorthair Pointer, Nabu, does not like it and makes a huge fuss if I try to use it on him.
Skout's Honor
Skout's Honor sells sprays and shampoos that are similar to Wondercide. The main difference is their products all contain a combination of cedarwood and peppermint oil, rather than having various fragrance options.
Veterinary Formula
While I'm a huge fan of Veterinary Formula's antifungal and hot spot & itch relief sprays and shampoos, I only recently discovered they also sell flea and tick products! Like the rest of their products, their flea and tick sprays and shampoos are highly rated.
Many reviews note that the smell is pleasant and much more mild compared to other options (I would assume Wondercide and Skout's Honor), which is a huge plus. This may be due to the fact that rather than using essential oils in their products, they use a plant ingredient called Pyrethrum. Another perk is that they are a more affordable option compared to other brands. You can get a bundle of both the shampoo and spray for just $17!
Longer-Lasting Options
While sprays and shampoos are great for short-term protection, there are additional options that are longer lasting.
Wondercide Spot-On Treatment
Wondercide offers a spot-on topical treatment that works similarly to traditional flea treatments, but uses plant-based ingredients instead. The product is applied starting between the shoulder blades, and directed down the spine to the start of the tail.
Each tube provides protection for up to one month, and packages come with three tubes per box. The main thing to keep in mind is that the treatment is water resistant but not fully waterproof, so it may require more frequent reapplication for dogs that swim often or get frequent baths.
Collars and Pendants
Wearable flea and tick protection can be one of the simplest options for long-term prevention, especially if you don’t want to apply sprays before every outing.
Wondercide Flea and Tick Collar
Wondercide’s collar offers plant-based flea and tick repellency and can be a simple option for dog owners who prefer wearable protection rather than sprays.
One limitation is that the collar provides protection for up to four months once opened, so it may need to be replaced more frequently than other options.
FurLife Flea & Tick Pendant and Collar
Furlife products have become increasingly popular and are highly rated compared to many other natural flea and tick options.
Their collar is designed to provide protection for up to eight months, as long as it’s worn consistently. Similarly, they have a second option that is a pendant.
The pendant is particularly appealing because it:
- Provides up to 12 months of protection
- Slides onto your dog's existing collar
- Does not need to be worn continuously
For dog owners who spend a lot of time outdoors with their dogs, this type of product can provide an extra layer of protection without adding more work to your routine. For both the pendant and collar, they also have a variety of color options.
Side note: I previously loved using flea and tick wipes from Only Natural Pet because they made it incredibly easy to apply protection to paws, ears, underbellies, and other small nooks and crevices where ticks tend to hide. Unfortunately, that product appears to have been discontinued.
As my current stash runs out, I’m planning to switch to the Furlife pendant since it offers long-lasting protection and is so highly rated. I’ll update this post once I’ve had a chance to test it with my dogs!
Don't Forget Your Yard
Your dog isn’t the only place fleas and ticks can live. Treating your home and yard can add another important layer of prevention.
Both Wondercide and Skout's Honor offer home and yard sprays designed to:
- Kill fleas and ticks
- Eliminate larvae and eggs
- Repel mosquitoes
Treating outdoor areas like lawns, patios, and dog play spaces can help reduce the overall pest population your dog is exposed to.
A Layered Approach to Flea and Tick Prevention
Natural flea and tick products often work best when used together rather than relying on just one solution.
A simple layered approach could look like this:
Baseline Protection
Use a monthly spot-on treatment, like the Wondercide topical treatment, so your dog has a consistent level of protection without needing to wear something full time.
Extra Protection for Outdoor Adventures
Add additional protection when needed with options like:
- A pendant or collar
- Sprays before hikes and walks
Seasonal Grooming Support
During peak flea and tick seasons, replace your regular shampoo with a flea and tick prevention shampoo to provide another layer of protection.
Environmental Protection
Using home and yard sprays from brands like Wondercide or Skout’s Honor can help reduce the flea and tick population around your dog’s environment, adding another important layer of prevention.
Extra Tools That Can Help
Even with prevention, it’s still a good idea to check your dog after spending time outdoors. Tools like the Tick Mitt make it easy to swipe across your dog’s coat and catch ticks that may be crawling but haven’t attached yet.
This quick step can be especially helpful for dogs exploring tall grass, wooded trails, or fields.
Final Thoughts
Natural flea and tick options won’t always replace every situation where traditional medications might be needed, but they can be a helpful solution for dog owners who want to prioritize preventative, lower-toxicity approaches.
Using a layered strategy by combining topical protection, wearable options, grooming routines, and environmental treatments can help reduce exposure while still allowing your dog to enjoy the outdoors.
